The Book of the Right Way of Laozi – 44.

44

Fame or life, which is more dear?
Life or wealth, which do you covet more?
Getting or dying, which is worse?
Truly, therefore, avarice will cost you dearly.
He who has the most, has the most to lose.
It is no disgrace to know when you have had enough.
Knowing when to stop averts danger.
Such a one lives long and prospers.

名與身孰親?身與貨孰多?得與亡孰病?是故甚愛必大費;多藏必厚亡。知足不辱,知止不殆,可以長久。
