The world is unkind.

Objects appear as things of little value.

The sage is unkind,

People appear as things of little value.

The world is vacuous.

Is it not like working a bellows to feed the flame?

Empty, yet not depleted,

The more it is used, the more it produces.

Much repetitive talk is quickly exhausted,

Unlike one who guards the middle.

天 地 不 仁 , 以 萬 物 為 芻 狗 ﹔ 聖 人 不 仁 , 以 百 姓 為 芻 狗 。
天 地 之 間 , 其 猶 橐 籥 乎 。 虛 而 不 屈 , 動 而 愈 出 。
多 言 數 窮 , 不 如 守 中 。
